9:30 AM to 2:30 PM
On Friday, December 1, the BC Ministry of Mental Health and Addictions announced a new Overdose Emergency Response Centre to address the continuing crisis of overdose and overdose deaths, and to increase the urgency of actions going forward.
It is exciting to hear the Province commit to supporting communities like ours to take action on “focused, action-oriented strategies tailored to local community needs.” We have already begun this work together at the Overdose Prevention and Response symposium in May, and since then as the South Island Community Overdose Response Network (SICORN).
We hope you will be able to join us next Tuesday, December 12 from 9:30am-2:30pm at Victoria City Hall for a second symposium on community responses to overdose. We will hear from a panel of speakers who bring diverse and important perspectives and will spend the majority of our time together strategizing for action. We are pleased to announce that the Honourable Judy Darcy, Minister of Mental Health and Addictions, and Mark Tyndall, Executive Director of the BC Centre for Disease Control, professor at the UBC School of Population and Public Health, and deputy provincial health officer of BC will be joining us on our opening panel which will also include perspectives of people who have lived experience of illicit drug use and overdose, impacted family members, and frontline workers.
Please RSVP by noon on Thursday, Dec 7 so that we can confirm catering and provide you with some further information about the day.
