Canadian Olympian and figure skating legend Elvis Stojko suffered an apparent head injury during a performance on Saturday in Hamilton.

Stojko, a three-time world champion, was performing in a Stars On Ice event at FirstOntario Centre when the injury occurred.

The two-time Olympic silver medallist fell during an attempted double axel and struck his head on the ice.

Stojko was down for several moments but was able to wave to the crowd before leaving the ice for treatment.

Stars on Ice organizers released a statement on Sunday regarding Stojko’s condition.

“…Mr. Stojko was assisted off the ice, but under his own power. An ambulance took him to Juravinski Hospital for evaluation. He was accompanied by his wife Gladys and the tour physiotherapist. Doctors at Juravinski Hospital diagnosed Mr. Stojko as concussion-free, at which point he was released. As a precautionary measure, Elvis will not be skating in the tour’s [Sunday] performance…in London, Ont.”

Kurt Browning, who is also a performer in the show, offered assurances that Stojko should be fine.

“Elvis and the tour decided to just give him another day to recover from the fall. The doctor gave him the all clear, but safety first. He should be fine and we look forward to his return,” Browning told CBC Sports via email.

Many skating fans took to social media to wish Stojko a speedy recovery.
